Testing Fun!
4/11/19
The first day of testing went well! The students came in confident and relaxed. They left their worries at the door. The past couple of weeks I've talked to the class a lot about being prepared, training (like you'd train for a marathon or tournament), and positivity. I've shown fun music videos, read books, talked about test-taking like a genre, and made sure students were familiar with the features of the testing environment/interface. Yesterday we had a very intense test taking session! Students wrote worries on strips of paper (for a worry chain), created desk name covers, and pictures for the bulletin boards. We even talked about test taking strategies in comparison to the an iPhone. (Thank you so Ms. Houston for linking the chain!) Every test day I'll have a little treat for students on their desks. Today students got "Smartie Pants! Two pictures (of our worry chain are attached). I'll post more pictures this evening or over the weekend.

Holden Visit
3/14/19
Students were placed into six groups and they each made their own pill bug terrarium. They filled the bottom of a two-liter bottle up with dirt, dead leaves, bark, a stone, a stick, and a little bit of water. Last but not least, they added the pill bug. Students like to observe the pill bug throughout the day.

Valentine's Day Party
2/14/19
Thank you to Mrs. Davies and Ms. Houston for planning our party! Thank you to all of the families who sent in items, attended the party, and helped students get their valentines ready! I somehow only managed to snap four pictures. Students had fun passing out valentines, reading them, eating, and chatting! :)

Gingerbread House Week
December 17-21, 2018
What a fun week of Gingerbread House FUN!! Students used engineering and design skills to build a house on Tuesday, decorate it on Wednesday, and on Thursday used math skills to problem solve, calculate the area and perimeter of the house, and calculate the circumference and area of a sugar cookie. On Friday I shared some gingerbread goodies with students. There were so many pictures - creating a video slide show was much easier and quicker. Enjoy!! :)

Holiday Studies
December 2018
Last month Aarav’s dad share information and pictures about Diwali. Our holiday studies continued. Thank you to Mrs. Hackney for coming in to talk about Hanukkah last week. Thank you to Mr. Bar (Ba'sil's step-dad) for sharing some information about Eid al-Fitr. This week I presented mini lessons on Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Jehovah’s Witness. The purpose of these studies is to promote understanding, perspective, tolerance, and respect.

Muffles' Truffles
December 2018
The focus of this unit is the development of the open array as a model for multiplication and division. The unit used a series of investigations based on the context of Muffles’ Truffles shop. Muffles makes and sells truffles. His truffles are so scrumptious that the demand increases and he needs to hire a helper. This story leads students into investigations. The pictures below are of students presenting findings to the Math Congress.

Art-to-Go
Wednesday, 12/5/18
This special program came to our classroom. Artifacts were brought in by the Cleveland Art Museum and handled by the 3rd graders. Special gloves were worn so that students could handle the items with care. Students sharpened their inquiry, observation, and questioning skills before the “big reveal!”

The Big Dinner
Week of 11/26/18
This inquiry-based unit focuses on “the development of multiplication, including automatizing the facts, using the ratio table, and developing the distributive property with large numbers.” Students are grouped in pairs or trios to strategize, solve, prove, and present their findings to the mathematical community (the class). The pictures below represent numbers string work and the final investigation of THE BIG DINNER.
How long will the 24-pound turkey cook, at 15 minutes per pound?
You can read more about the unit in the 11/30/18 newsletter.

Candy Corn Math
10/31/18
Groups of students were challenged to build a free-standing tower using toothpicks, candy corn, candy corn pumpkins, and chewy watermelon candy (because I couldn't find the chewy candy pumpkins). This was a great follow up to the "Marshmallow Challenge" from the start of the year. We have some future architects and engineers in class! It was great hearing words like: support, strong and solid base, and top heavy!

HOLDEN FIELD TRIP:
Friday, 10/1/18
What a fun field trip! We hiked through the forest for 2 hours observing and inquiring into nature. Our docent had students using maps as guides, leading students into activities involving the collection of items that match antonyms and synonyms, learning facts about chipmunks, searching for acorns, searching for living things, collecting soil, and more! Thank you to the following students' families for chaperoning: Adelaide, Zy'arrah, Nick (both parents), Will, and Alexa! :)

COMPUTER CHOICE TIME:
Wednesday, 10/3/18
Last week students spelled out “RAIDERS” for the second time. The reward was a Computer Choice Time, which was “cashed in” on Wednesday. Every student had a computer available for choice time. It took some planning with other teachers, but it was well worth it! We’re almost done spelling RAIDERS for the third time! (There's also a picture from Choice Time on Friday.)

Congratulations to the students for earning so many Raider/Boulevard Bucks!
The class "cashed" them in for our first reward. It sure was a comfy day in pajamas with stuffed animals! We're already more than half way to the next reward.

SAFARI ESSENTIALS:
August 22, 2018
Happy 1st day of school! We had a great start to our learning safari! The day went SO smoothly. We even had our first animal sighting...a real live CHIPMUNK! (Ask your child about that story and about my reaction!) This morning we talked about the needs required to a have safe safari (proper clothing, bug spray, water, food...). Next, I showed a movie that I made using pictures and videos from my real safari. The second half of this video is about our LEARNING SAFARI! The video can be found in the "Special Projects" section. Afterwards, I presented each student with a special Essential Safari Kit! The essential items are listed below, as are some pictures. (Since I don't fully know yet who is permitted to be posted on the website with beautiful smiles, some of the faces are covered with sunglasses and/or fans.)

- Safari Hat & Sunglasses: It’s important to protect your eyes so that you can see all of your adventures.
- Every voyager needs a snack. Use the popcorns and mints to help fuel your next journey.
- You are learning in style when you wear your wrist wrap.
- When you’re on the move, things can get messy…. wash the slate (and your hands) clean! (wipe)
- You never want to forget where you’ve been…use the pen and paper to log each journey because school is about to begin.
- When in doubt, use the pencil and eraser so you can fix your mistakes.
- Reading will take you on many adventures, and you don’t want to lose your place. Use the bookmark to mark your space.
- Overheating is not cool! Use the fan to keep yourself cool.
- Stickers: Every adventure needs supplies, and marking yours will make them easier to recognize.
