Bridge Designing & Construction

 May 19, 2022

Our last math unit allows students to get creative! Students will be learning about, and constructing, different types of bridges. This week students were introduced to different types of bridges and important vocabulary that helps make bridges work (beam, column, abutment, compression, tension). We read a magazine article about bridges and watched a few short videos showing different bridge designs. Groups of students collaborated on building  beam bridges using a variety of materials. The class discussed their observations and experiences.

Ukraine Day
April 11, 2022

Today we honored Ukraine and marked the "official" end of our Action Project. "Official" because we continue to collect donations and will make drop offs as needed.  The entire day revolved around Ukraine. Our math involved sorting donations by attributes, analyzing data, making mathematical statements, and calculating the area and perimeter of boxes. Language Arts involved reading a passage and answering questions about Ukraine and writing cards to Ukrainians. Many students used Google Translator and wrote some Ukrainian phrases. We also practiced geography skills with a map. Seeing the class in yellow and blue was heart-warming! Thank you to all of the families who sent in items to make our day extra special (and tasty) and a big THANK YOU to everyone who donated items. Lastly, thank you to Ella and Dinesh's moms for driving with me to the Pokrova Ukrainian Church in Parma! Many pictures were taken today. I put them all in a slideshow with music.

Ukraine Action Project

March 2022

I am so proud of our class! They are inquirers and so incredibly caring, both as a whole class and as individuals! Every day we have discussed the conflict in Ukraine. We have learned SO much about citizenship, government, NATO, the EU, types of leaders, history, World War 2, the USSR, and so much more. Students come to school with thoughtful questions and comments. I share short video clips (kid-appropriate) every day, mainly relating to refugees, the willpower and determination of the Ukrainian people, and history. (Some of the video links are listed below the pictures.) The students planned an action project for Ukrainian citizens and refugees. You have probably seen the flyer made by students already either through email or the hard copy. The flyer is linked:   Ukraine Needs Your Help!

Parafroessional Day
4/6/22
Our surprise for Mr. Lowery was a success! We made him feel appreciated and loved!
Students secretly made cards for Mr. Lowery while he was not in the room. We also made him a banner to hang in the doorway, and I dressed up as a wrestling coach. :) Thank you to Dinesh's mom and Hannah's mom for sending in treats to celebrate Mr. Lowery!  Thank you to Remy's family for gifting Mr. Lowery with an Amazon gift card from our class!

Black History Showcase

February 2022
Students decided to find quotes from significant Black individuals (alive or deceased) that represent courage, strength, action, and peace. The quotes are being written on traced-out handprints. These are displayed on our classroom door.

Plastic Turned to Metal Video
2/23/22
While our action project has been in full swing for a few weeks now, spreading the word about our action continues. This video was created to let others know about our idea. The class photos below were taken for the video AND for Kendra's last day.

Planetarium Field Trip

2/20/22

We visited the Planetarium at Shaker High School. Our first field trip in 2 years was a success, the bus ride and all! Mr. Childs, the Planetarium teacher, taught us about resources on Earth, the moon, Mars, and asteroids. This trip was rescheduled due to omicron, during our last IB unit of inquiry, How the World Works.

Welcome to our class!

2/9/22

We were very excited to welcome Mohammed to our classroom! He is sweet and super excited about being in school! Welcome to Mohammed and his family! The pictures below are the students watching a "Mystery Doug" video about the first cartoon. Do you notice all the red, white, and green clothing? :)

Gingerbread Fun and Winter Olympics:
12/17/21
Everytime I read the word "gingerbread," students had to pass a bag to the left. When the story was over, students opened up some gingerbread and winter-themed goodies. Later that morning, students competed in the Winter Olympics!
Students used mini marshmallows and other supplies to play “Minute to Win It” activities. While listening to verbal directions, students drew a mystery object on a paper plate, which was on top of their heads. (It was a snowman!) Students stacked snowmen (mini marshmallows), shoveled snow (with a straw), tossed snowballs, and created a virtual snowman.

Rotary Club Visit - Dictionaries
12/3/21
On Friday afternoon members of the Rotary Club from Shaker Heights visited our classroom. They passed out dictionaries to each student, talked about dictionaries, their importance, and their function. Students will keep the dictionaries in their desks all year and will then take the dictionaries home at the end of the school year. Thank you to the Rotary Club for their dedication and commitment to learning!

Candy Corn & Pumpkin Math
9/29/21
Students learned about circumference using a pumpkin-themed clementine. After estimating the circumference, students used string and rulers to measure the circumference. We also worked with fractions using the clementine pieces. Let's not forget about the candy corn math! Students used candy corn, candy pumpkins, and toothpicks to create a standing candy corn tower. This was a fun way to connect autumn food with math!

Outside Fun / Shade Break
8/27/21
We went outside for 15 mintues for a break from the stuffy classroom. We saw nature, relaxed, some kids read - in short, we had a great time!

Math Glyphs
8/26 - 27/21
Each student created a glyph, representing him/herself as a mathematician. The glyph key involved colored hats, glasses, shaped noses, and mouth shapes.
Sorting and Classifying: We explored, interpreted, and sorted the glyphs. We made bar graphs of the glyphs displaying the favorite time of day and mathematical thinking. Afterward, each student wrote comparison statements in his/her math journal.

Safari Essentials: Survivval to Our Grade 3 Adventure
First Day of School (8/25/21)

On the first day of school I surprised the students with SAFARI ESSENTIALS - items needed to survive our 3rd grade learning adventure. Students were able to choose what went home and what stayed at school. The only exception is the safari hats. Those stay at school all year long, and then go home.
Check out this video of our classroom! I've been working hard to make our classroom GRRRRRReat!

Here's a sneak peek at our year of adventure.
(This was made a few years back, so the room looks a little different.)
