Playhouse Field Trip
Thursday, 3/5/20
We had a great time watching "What to do with an Idea!" The performers did an amazing job bringing the story to life by communicating ideas and feelings with the audience. Taking photos during the performance was not permitted - but here are some pictures taken prior to the play starting. Thank you to Mr. Cross for attending the trip!

Black History Month
Week of 2/17/20
Remember, Educate, Celebrate:
We've been participating in a school-wide project about Black History Month. Each classroom has been inquiring into this significant month, and developing ideas to create a door display. I've shown some short videos and have read books aloud. The class decided to create a bus with Rosa Parks as the driver. Students choose various African Americans to study - and to place the pictures and facts in the bus windows. The bus is a timeline of the action taken, not birthdays. People at the bus stop took action prior to Rosa Parks. This has been a wonderful research project: focusing on reading, main idea, details, perspective, and group work.

Wordless Picture Books: Story Elements
Week of 2/6/20
Groups of students (from our class and Mrs. Chung’s class) looked at a wordless picture book, identified the story elements, and displayed them on a large sticky note. After sharing the elements with the class, students were able to do a “gallery walk” – where they walked around to each board and examined the elements and the book more closely.

Brave Irene Video
2/7/20
Yesterday students analyzed the character traits of Irene and wrote a paragraph about a trait using text-based evidence. Today, students get to relax and enjoy the story read aloud by Vice President (and environment activist) Al Gore.

Provocation
2/5/20
The first lesson was a provocation to generate excitement and inquiry. I passed out colored and laminated pictures from a book (unknown at that point) to each student. Each student had to examine the picture and look for details. Then, as a class, and without talking, students sequenced the picture. We made a timeline of the story, examined the pictures, and re-ordered as needed. Afterwards, I shared the name of the book, “The Lion and the Mouse,” and then showed the pictures of the book. It was interesting to compare the sequence of our pictures to the actual story. Using the pictures as a key, we had a class discussion about the events, characters, setting, and problem of the story. Do those items sound familiar? They are the story elements! This unit will focus on writing, illustrating, story elements, and the appreciation of the aesthetic.
