Show Don't Tell
February 2022
As we are learning how to develop more descriptive writing, students discussed how to not just say how they feel, but describe the feeling. We titled this activity, “Show Don’t Tell”. For example, instead of writing “I am mad,” you may choose to write “My fists were clenched while I stomped out of the room.” We watched a short video and then brainstormed examples as a class. Students then paired up to complete a graphic organizer.

Black History Month:
February 2022
While we discuss equity throughout the entire year, this month we’re really focusing on Black History, which is American History. We watched short videos, read books, and had deep conversations all week long about Black History and equity. Throughout the month we will inquire into a variety of Black History symbols (people and items). The class will design a cumulative project to showcase our knowledge and passion for equity.

Dr. Patterson, a former 4th grade teacher at Boulevard until this school year, now works in the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Department as a Learning Specialist / Coach. Dr. Patterson came into our class and taught a lesson about the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Migration, and their significance to Black people, the movement towards equality, and the arts. She taught us some significant history, shared some short videos and sound clips, and led great discussions whole group and small group. Students reflected on pictures in small groups on Jamboard. You can view the presentation, links included here: Harlem Renaissance Presentation (from Dr. Patterson)

Alma Thomas
2/11/22
We spent some time looking at the work of the African-American artist, Alma Thomas, who became well known in her 60’s after retiring as a teacher. Her signature abstract art pieces are on canvas and are characterized by shapes, color, rhythm, and powerful emotions. Students were given time to express their artistic side using Alma Thomas’s work as inspiration.
