In honor of Veterans Day, students wrote cards to veterans connected to our class. The veterans connected to our class are: Lola's dad, Lola's grandpa, Emmy's dad, Desmynn's mom, Delaney's grandpa, and Mrs. Becerra's friend's husband. On Friday, Lola's dad came into class to talk about his leadership experiences while he served (for 8 years) in the army. Thank you to Mr. Henry for making the connection between our IB unit and Veterans Day!

Local Government Tic-Tac-Toe Definition
11/12/19
This activity applied knowledge of local government -with a twist. Groups of students were given a large sticky note, and were asked to draw a tic-tac-toe board with "local government" written in the middle. Groups wrote down words that represent local government in the other spaces. The challenge afterwards was to create a definition of local government using 3 words from the board. Many groups used more than 3 words! The was a fun way to practice writing, cooperation, and the use of local government terms!

https://www.shakeronline.com/
Students worked together to inquire into our local government's website. Students searched for facts about the City Council, the recreation department, the mayor, special events, Shaker's map, and more. Kid Leaders
Week of 10/14/19 - 10/23/19
Our study into leadership continues through kid leaders. You don’t have to be part of a government structure to make a difference. What does it take to be a leader? Does everyone have to be a leader? What characteristics do leaders have? During the provocation (with the Kid President) we discussed adult leaders who made significant contributions. Next, we examined 6 kids who happen to be contributing leaders. After wondering and making connections about each kid leader, the identities were revealed! Then, each student chose 3 leaders of interest. I formed groups based on student interest. Small groups of 3 students are working together. Groups completed the following: Sticky Notes: inquiry and connection; Article: Groups read a short article about the kid leader, determined the main idea and supporting details, and defined leadership characteristics. Websites: Students found interesting facts about the kid leaders. Posters: The information gathered from the research was shared in poster-format.

_______________________________ PROVOCATION 10/17/19 Our new IB unit started this week. I told the class that one person truly inspires me to be a better person and to make the world more awesome. I took ten questions to guide students into my inspiring leader’s secret identity. Afterwards, I revealed the secret leader (THE KID PRESIDENT!) and we watched some inspiring videos of the leader. After each video we talked about how the video made students feel and what it made them think about. After the video ("Three Questions that Change the World"), I posed 2 questions to the students. What are you NOT ok with? What can we do about it? We had some very deep conversations. Gun control and immigration were the biggies. (So FYI, expect some action to be happening soon!) Each student wrote a sentence about how she/she can take action at home, in school, or in the community. After sharing and discussing the responses, I explained that this unit would involve an inquiry into leadership. This first lesson was a provocation to generate excitement and inquiry. Students will begin to dig deeper into leadership and local communities over the next few weeks. Kid President Videos: |
Here's a great inspirational video about how ONE person, young or old, can make a difference!
