Owl Pellets
May 13, 2019

Pairs of students investigated a mystery object…an owl pellet! Students dissected the pellets (which had been sanitized) and discovered the skeletons of various prey. This activity was interesting, fun, and a tad disgusting – but in a good way! (...and yes, students did wash their hands afterwards!)

Life Cycle Observations
Week of May 6, 2019

We have many living things in our classroom now (not including the humans). Students have been observing the life cycles of mealworms, seeds (lima beans, pinto beans, popcorn seeds), caterpillars, and tadpoles. Soon we'll have a frog in our classroom!

Provocation
May 1, 2019

Would you know a hornet’s nest if you saw one? How about a horse skull? This IB unit is about living things, their adaptations, and their life cycles. Various objects were placed around the room. Students observed (using 4 out of the 5 senses) and inquired into each item. After students shared wonder questions and connections about the possible form and function of each item, the real identities were revealed. Click HERE to view a PDF-format of the PowerPoint shared after the exploration.
