Food Chains - Owl Pellets
May 18, 2022
To continue our learning about food chains, students were given an owl pellet to explore and dissect. Each student had to first record their observations and wonder questions about what the object could be. Once we revealed what the object was, they had the chance to dissect the owl pellet. Students found a variety of bones, fur, and feathers in their pellet (chart of some of the bones found)! After the dissection, we shared out what we found and how this taught us about the owl’s part in a food chain.

Seed Bags
May 6, 2022
Seed Bags: Our first part of our new planner includes learning about the plant life cycle. We are observing three different types of seeds: a pinto bean, a corn kernel, and sunflower seed. Students have placed the seeds in a bag with a damp paper towel and will watch as these seeds germinate and sprout their roots. Students are recording their observations every couple of days to mark the changes. While half of the class prepared the seed bags, the other half read through books anout plants and recorded facts and vocabuluary words. Then we switched stations!

Provocation
May 4, 2022
To introduce our new Unit of Inquiry, students looked at a variety of different objects that belong to certain (once) living things. Students walked around the class and inquired into these items, which included a shark jaw, different types of animal bones, coral, wood chewed by a beaver, birds nest, giant pinecone, a butterfly, and more. While they were observing these objects, students wrote down what they thought the objects were (form) and how/what they were used for (function). After students had a chance to explore, we talked about what each object was and how they helped the animal.

Aquatic Life Cycles
May 2, 2022
Students learned about the fascinating diversity of adaptations found in the animal world and at the Cleveland Aquarium. They discovered how specific adaptations help animals survive and thrive in their habitats.
